How Do I Find Happiness?
Are you happy?
No, really think about it…Are you completely and utterly happy? Oh I get it, you’re in the process of becoming happy. If so, then you obviously need something in order to become happy, right? It’s a simple fact that happiness is a human desire. A human ‘need’ if you must. I don’t think I’ve ever come across someone who doesn’t want to be happy. A clever person might say, ‘well it doesn’t matter if I’m happy, I just care about making others happy’. That’s great but you are still gaining satisfaction from helping out others so still, you are seeking out happiness within yourself.
Therefore if happiness is a human desire then we must ask a different question: What Makes Me Happy? It seems to be the common thing nowadays to work long hours, have little sleep and restrict ourselves to eating plain and simple foods. Sounds like great fun doesn’t it! But there is sense in this. Sometimes we have to go through tough times in order to come out stronger. Our environment doesn’t allow us to grow as humans did many years ago. There is not enough danger or fear in our lives in order to overcome life-threatening situations, which is what brings out our fight or flight responses. Instead we seek for growth by applying fear to other areas of our lives such as work, school and sport. We jump on trends and by fitting in to these popular trends, we feel a sense of worth and value but again, this doesn’t make us happy. We constantly put ourselves through situations that we just do no enjoy just because it’s the ‘right thing to do’. Happiness is defined as: ’a mental or emotional state of well-being characterized by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.’
Take 5 minutes to think of a time when you felt ‘intense joy’. Write it down on a piece of paper or in your phone’s notes section.
That feeling you had doing that thing you were doing wasn’t a fluke. In that moment your mind was fully stimulated by the things you were doing and the way you were thinking. Current education and employment fails to deliver the correct learning environment in order for human potential to develop to it’s fullest. Creativity that we had when we were young is essentially taught out of us.
Yes most of us need to earn a living in order to provide for our families but should we be unhappy doing it? Why do some people have the same job and maybe a smaller house but seem like the happiest person in the world? It’s because they understand what makes them happy. They have a different perspective of life. They are content with what they have. The problem other people have is that they aren’t content with what they have but instead of doing something about it, they moan and tell everyone about it. Some people even try and bring other people down in the process. It’s time to find out what makes YOU happy. Write, draw, imagine…however you want to do it, you now need to do the following:
